The three questions Cardiff council refuses to answer about felled trees in Llandaff Fields

Contractors at the Rise, Penhill Road, Llandaff on the day trees were felled

Nerys Lloyd Pierce, the Chair of Cardiff Civic Society said:

“We have three questions that Cardiff Council have so far refused to answer.  These are:

Planning conditions – detailed in the arboculturalist’s report – stated that tree felling should not take place until October 1. Why didn’t that happen?  Is that not a breach of conditions?

Planning conditions – detailed in the arboculturalist’s report – stated these works should have been undertaken by the Council.  Why didn’t this happen?  Is this not a breach of planning conditions?

Planning conditions – detailed in the arboculturalist’s report – stated that these works should not take place in the park but only from the The Rise site on Penhill Road.  Why didn’t this happen?  Is this not a breach of planning conditions?

These trees were on public land.  They were part of Llandaff Fields.  Cardiff’s planning committee gave permission to the developer to cut these trees simply to create a better view for the future residents of the townhouses planned for the site. Cardiff’s planning officers were wrong to recommend this.  The committee was wrong to accept it.

We call on the Cabinet member for Strategic Planning  and Transport to apply the rules that exist in the current Trees Technical Guidance Note (TGN), as well as strengthening them as a matter of urgency, to create a cast iron protection for trees.
